Handing over of Personal Protective Equipment

Under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” the Executive Mayor, Cllr Freda Nkondo, handed over Personal Protective Equipments (PPE’S) to the Adopt a River workers in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality. This initiative highlights the importance of wetlands, and Vhembe District has expressed its support and appreciation for the efforts of Adopt a River in both the district and the Collins Chabane Local Municipality.

Adopt a River has about 1000 volunteer workers who serve various villages within Collins Chabane Local Municipality. These volunteers work diligently to maintain cleanliness and safeguard the environment by ensuring that rivers are kept clean, preventing water pollution, and collecting waste such as pampers and plastics. Their actions play a significant role in reducing the spread of disease.

The Executive Mayor expressed her appreciation, stating, “As a district, we saw a need to raise awareness by providing these workers with the necessary PPE’s to protect them from potential health risks and various diseases.”

Ms. Thamathama Ratshili, the secretary of the Vhembe Biosphere, also voiced her support for the program. “They are doing an excellent job, as their efforts ensure that our water remains clean and free from contamination caused by waste,” she said.

Ms. Miyambo Enny, Secretary of Adopt a River in Collins Chabane Local Municipality, stationed at Mchipisi Village, expressed her gratitude to the Executive Mayor, saying, “This support motivates us to work even harder on our projects. We also urge community members to cooperate by limiting waste disposal outside designated dumping areas.”

PPE’S handed over include gloves, helmets, boots, overalls, and musk’s.
