The Provincial and District Military Veterans recently visited Vhembe District Municipality to discuss key matters relating to their safety, enhance collaborative working relationships, and outline the specific support they require from local government. The engagement was led by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Freda Nkondo, and attended by senior municipal officials and representatives of the veterans’ structures.
This strategic visit aligns with the Military Veterans Act of 2011, which mandates the state to support and recognise military veterans through various social, economic, and developmental initiatives. During the meeting, the Executive Mayor reaffirmed the municipality’s ongoing commitment to this responsibility.
“We will continue to provide support and ensure that internships and learnership programmes are made available to equip unemployed individuals with relevant skills and improve their employability,” said Executive Mayor Nkondo.
Mr. Jacob Rapholo, Chairperson of Military Veterans in Limpopo, praised Vhembe District Municipality for its continued dedication. “Vhembe is number one in the country when it comes to taking care of military veterans, especially by providing office space, support personnel, and other necessary facilities that make access to services possible,” he said.
The engagement also included an update on the rollout of the military veterans’ helpdesk initiative. This programme is designed to decentralise veteran services and reduce the burden of travel on veterans, especially those living in remote or rural areas.
“Each municipality must have a helpdesk so that veterans can access services near their homes. This brings dignity and efficiency to how we deliver support,” added Mr. Rapholo.
Veterans also raised concerns around housing, access to healthcare, and inclusion in local economic development opportunities. In response, the Executive Mayor committed to further engagements aimed at integrating veterans into various developmental programmes, including those linked to small business development, public works, and community-based projects.
The session concluded with a renewed commitment to foster closer collaboration between municipalities and military veterans in building inclusive and supportive communities.
